The Wounds Of The Faithful

Welcome back to the next part of my story when I was serving in an inner city church in the youth group. I recall the events that led up to us uprooting and moving to the inner city. I describe what it was like to live under a bridge, the wonderful people we were called to serve, and the delicious food there. I set the stage to the legalism, toxic shaming, and shallow preaching that was to be the norm in this church. I remember how I started teaching my first voice students during that time. I end the episode with a favorite Christmas song for you!

We are continuing the next stage in my life story and abuse story. We left off at graduation from bible college and the tumultuous first year of marriage. I describe the process of becoming a Baptist missionary, the different kinds of missionaries, and the pitfalls. I explain why we chose an unorthodox path as missionaries and who our first couple churches we worked with as church planters. I make some exciting announcements and updates during the podcast. I end the episode with my rendition of The Candlelight Carol by John Rutter.

Welcome back to Part Two of my interview with Joy and Pastor Jason Harris from Cairns, Australia. We continue with their story of abuse at the hands of Larry, Joy's ex husband and Jason's father. This week we talk about Kevin, Joy's oldest son, a pastor who believes his mother's rape was her fault, and that she should repent. Kevin is also a defender of pedophiles like Jack Schapp and believes children are guilty of consenting to being groomed and violated by adults. Joy and Jason both share their journey of healing, what to do if you're in an abusive marriage, and how can pastors help abuse victims instead of contributing to their suffering. Bios:
Joy studied elementary education before going on to teach at the primary school level as well as homeschooling for twenty-six years. She has ministered in schools Religious Education classes, Sunday Schools, and Holiday Bible Clubs as well as through her speaking at various seminars and retreats. Joy is also a musician who has collaborated on multiple recording projects, maintained a private teaching studio for over thirty years and been an accompanist wherever she lived. Joy currently is retired, does pet-sitting and is a Domestic Violence advocate, working to educate Christians, especially, and support victims. Joy has seven children, twenty-one grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Jason is a writer, pastor, and academic. He has authored multiple books, articles, and papers including his book Theological Meditations on the Gospel. Jason has degrees in theology, music, accounting, and research. He is currently working on his PhD from James Cook University as well as serving as pastor at CrossPoint Church. Jason has lived in beautiful Cairns, Australia since 2007.

Is there such a thing as consent in marriage? Is there ever a time when you can say no to your spouse? Can someone be raped in a Christian marriage? These are some of the questions we will answer with my two guests from Down Under, Joy Harris, and her son Pastor Jason Harris. Joy is a survivor of years of verbal, emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse at the hands of her now ex husband, Larry. Larry was convicted of raping his wife and was sentenced to serve a brief prison sentence. Jason, along with the rest of his 6 siblings, suffered horrible child abuse growing up as missionary kids. On Part One of this interview, Joy shares with us how she met Larry, when the abuse started, and the church culture that enabled the abuse to take place. We talk about corporal punishment vs physical abuse of a child, what does the bible say about sex in marriage, and what their Pastor did when the abuse was reported. How do you cope with an illness that doesn't seem to go away? How does it affect your relationship with God? What are some coping strategies to deal with the struggles? "Why did you marry him?" is a question I've been asked more than once. This week, I tell the story of how I met my ex, his family's rich heritage, and our strange dating relationship full of red flags. I point out some of the traits that are textbook narcissistic behaviors that he exhibited. I asked myself, "Why did I ignore the abuse right up to the engagement?"
