We are continuing our series of character studies in the Bible in the perspective of an abuse survivor. Today we are talking about a very difficult passage of Scripture: Judges 19, which is the story of the Levite and the concubine. Why is this horrific story included in the Bible? [00:00:33] Hello everybody. Welcome back to the podcast. Thanks for joining me today. I hope that you guys got through last podcast about the I B L P and the review of Shiny Happy people and about the Duggars. It was a difficult, yet important [00:01:00] episode to do, and it was a bit triggering I'm sure for a lot of you who have been through something similar. But I hope that now that this documentary is out that. People will start to see the man behind the curtain, so to speak. We need exposure for these cult groups because otherwise nobody would leave, nobody would get any healing.
[00:01:28] And these men like Bill Gothard would be more powerful.
[00:01:35] So what are we gonna talk about today? We are going to go through Judges 19, and this is called the Benjamite War. And if you're not familiar with that, you may be familiar with the Levite that had a concubine. So this is one of these [00:02:00] stories that is, horrifying, and I almost didn't want to do this particular chapter because it's hard and it's gross. And it's like, well, what am I gonna say to this narrative,

[00:00:33] Welcome back to the podcast. Glad I didn't scare any of you away with last week's episode on Abraham and Isaac. Tough content. I know. Now, this week I am going to do a review on Shiny Happy people. The documentary, I don't usually talk about hot topics on [00:01:00] this show, but it's all over social media and my advocacy groups, and people want to talk about this documentary.
[00:01:10] It actually hits close to home for me, so we're gonna talk about it. There's a lot to cover with this particular cult, but before we start though, I'm gonna give you an update on adventures in foot surgery. My cast comes off tomorrow. I am excited about that. Two weeks with this thing on and being on bedrest.
[00:01:43] Um, the majority of the time. I'm ready to get out of the house. I think I get a walking boot next, and I start physical therapy next week. Learning to walk with my toe surgery, I [00:02:00] learned a lot this time On the first surgery, uh, they gave me a walker to get around since it is a non-weight-bearing surgery, which means my foot cannot touch the ground.
[00:02:16] And it's not as easy as it sounds. I had very little pain the first week and no pain the second with my foo...

[00:00:33] Hello everybody. I'm coming to you live from the Winkler couch with my foot propped up on lots of pillows. Now I am not gonna show you the picture, my boot, you've all seen a boot before.
[00:00:51] But maybe later I can show you my scar when it gets, more healed up and I can take the boot off and wear regular shoes. [00:01:00] So, as you probably can gather that my foot surgery went well, very successful.
[00:01:10] I don't have any pain with some Advil and Tylenol. Overall. Everything went great. So I am still here to do a podcast episode with you.
[00:01:23] I'm bored anyway out of my mind, so
[00:01:29] why not, right? I can sleep, I can watch tv, surf Facebook, but. I'm gonna do a podcast episode for you, and I mentioned last week that we were going to do Abraham and Isaac, Abraham sacrificing Isaac, and I mentioned last week that I almost didn't do this one because it's difficult. It's not.
[00:01:58] It's not an easy study[00:02:00] because the majority of our society tends to think that this is child abuse. We're going to talk about that, but as always, God is recording things as they happen. And there are always lessons to be learned even in the difficult Bible passages. Even the ones we don't understand a hundred percent.

Abraham and Lot

[00:00:33] Everybody, how are you guys doing? What's up? Come on in. Coming to you from Winkler Living Room. I have successfully completed my first surgery this past week. It went really well. Better than I anticipated. Everybody was wonderful at the hospital and I have no pain or, [00:01:00] um, postprocedure bleeding.
[00:01:02] And so I was very happy about that. And I do have another surgery coming up on Tuesday. Tuesday will be doing surgery on my right foot.
[00:01:13] And then when that's healed up, most likely the end of July, we'll be doing my left foot. And
[00:01:21] so I will be on bedrest for two weeks starting on Tuesday. I have spent the last week or so trying to get all of the garden and the yard done. So Brian doesn't have much to do. I do have a neighbor who's a master gardener, and she's gonna come in and check things to make sure that nothing's dying out there.
[00:01:46] Brian will be watering. You can do the watering without any problems. And, uh, my neighbor's also bringing us some food, some leftovers. So Brian does not have to cook every night or [00:02:00] they'll just make breakfast in the morning and, uh, we'll have something to reheat at night. That's a big blessing. And my Bible study group, they gave me some gift cards to Uber Eats and a pizza joint nearby, and that's a blessing.
[00:02:17] Super big treat. I think my parents will be over to visit with some food as well, and so I am ready to go. Ready to get back into exercise, get back into being without pain.
[00:02:30] So anyway, I will have a podcast episode next week from my living room or the bedroom.

Scott is a graduate of Liberty University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pastoral Ministries, and a master of Arts degree in religion. Scott has served as a pastor for over 33 years in churches in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and now Michigan. Scott's passion is leading his local church in saturating northern Michigan with the gospel of Jesus Christ by meeting as many people as possible right where they are, and moving them to where God wants them to be.

[00:00:37] We're on the story of Joseph part two, and we're gonna do a review on Joseph. I do want you to go back to part one if you didn't listen to it, cause you'll miss some of the stuff. If you're not familiar with Joseph, you're definitely going to be lost.

[00:00:59] an [00:01:00] update for today on the website, I was just working with my webmaster Etana and the website is still down. We worked on it three hours today. Jet Pack gave me a backup of my site and somehow it didn't work. We tried everything, and so we're gonna have to ask Ionas and Jet Pack for help. I don't know. I don't know what else there is to do, but I am recording my episodes and I'm able to put them on the podcast platforms.
[00:01:40] Although you will notice that, for instance, if you go on Apple Podcasts, it only shows two episodes, whereas this is the hundred and 34th episode, it erased all of my previous episodes. So basically, I am having to start over. Now, I had some pages of my website saved, but the, the blog, the podcast page, my store, my music page, they're gone.
I have to input everything back in there, all over again. Uh, today I finished resetting up the podcast feed. Uh, so it's been a bit of a nightmare. I was really frustrated and discouraged yesterday. My wood master, who was awesome, Etana Holowinko from Jazz Society, she's been helping me.
And this is what she said. I wish that I could wave a magic wand and fix everything, but I can't. Uh, it is unfortunate that I lost all the data, but I do have some of the pages. I do have my, all my podcasts are all saved on my computer. My music saved on the computer. Just gonna take some time to put everything on there.
So when you go to my website, you will see my site is under construction, so that's what that is. But you will be able to, view all of the podcasts on the YouTube channel. Hasn't affected that. I do have last week's podcast on the audio feeds, it just shows that I don't have any previous podcasts, so it's kinda weird until I add them all back in...

[00:00:00] Hi friends. Welcome. Come on in. How are you doing today? I hope that you enjoyed the study of Jeremiah last week. I know it was a lot to take in. There's a lot about Jeremiah to learn. You just did an overview last week. So many nuggets to chew on. So I hope that you learned something. I hope that encouraged you to read Jeremiah for yourself and learn some additional things.
[00:00:34] Now, this week I was doing some Bible reading in Genesis, and I happen to notice that the story before was the story about Dinah one of Jacob's daughters. And so I read it and I decided that I would do that lesson this week because it's short [00:01:00] and to the point. And so that's what we're gonna talk about today's, Dinah story.
[00:01:07] And I, you might have noticed that my podcast has been posting little bit late. I already mentioned that I had problems with my web hosting and I'm in the process of changing to a new web host. I'm still having trouble with transferring, but I was two weeks late getting out episodes. This week it was just a matter of exhaustion.
[00:01:36] Working 10 hour days now and coming home and trying to edit the podcast and get it posted on time, and I was just so tired. I was falling asleep on the couch. My husband's poking me. It's. 9: 30, 10 o'clock at night. And up until, you know, the [00:02:00] last couple weeks, I haven't had any problems posting on time, but I just wanna let you know I'm not going anywhere.
[00:02:07] Nothing is wrong, it's just technical difficulties. And then I'm just tired. Uh,

Speaking of posts, you've probably seen the big fiasco with the Dalai Lama. I don't even know what to say to that.
[00:01:17] This whole, you wanna suck my tongue. Saying that to a child is unacceptable.
[00:01:23] And I, I think a lot of you agree with that. He should never have said that to a child.
[00:01:29] Not surprised, but still appalled anyway. And we need to teach our children the good touch and the bad touch and what's appropriate interaction between adults and children.

EP 130: Breaking The Bondage From Addiction: Doug Sweeney

Bio:
Summarized, my story begins from adolescence. I chose to consume alcohol; what was always in my home life. Instantly I decided this would be what I espoused because it gave me confidence and helped with being able to interact. It supported many things, although it increased very fast with tolerance and soon indulging into several drugs. For so many years I aimed at finding "functional" addict", but never came close. Rock bottom was never the end. There was always another bottom that was lower and harder to hit; proving it wouldn't never stop until I died. Overuse of the word Grace is impossible for me because it is the very means that I was granted to see and tangibly experience and believe in real freedom.   God allows me to remember from where he's brought me and oh  am I ever filled with gratitude. And I want to start from the bottom to walk with hurting addicted Men who also want to find freedom. I have created "Breaking Bondage from Addiction.com, to serve others of whom I was for years too long. Numerous unknown times, either by personal choice or usually by court mandate; I went through secular programs to overcome addiction, never once with peace, freedom, or success. Finally with Grace that could never be measured, I encountered a reality that I am forgivable, no matter the infinite chances I'd been given. God really loves us equally as much no matter what we've done to know how big shame can be. Shame has no place with a contrite heart and when one becomes ready to let God have control.
