EP 109: My Story: Part 16: What’s It Like To Be Fired From A Church?

Thank you for continuing with me on the next chapter of my story. I start out clarifying what went down when the church fired me, and the fallout from that. I fill in the rest of that time period with what happened at home behind the scenes, including nearly losing everything on a business venture, my ex sabotaging expressions of my musical gifts and other emotional abuses, and my dogs who helped me cope. I end with news of my new Christmas recording to be released next week!

[00:00:00] Diana Winkler: Hello everyone. Welcome back once again to the podcast. Thanks for coming back and listening to my story being a part of my journey.
[00:00:18] I've had some feedback on my story that I've been telling.
[00:00:23] And people ask me, why should you tell your story? Why go back and rehash all of this old stuff that you went through? Why don't you just move forward? That's a really good question. I have moved forward. But for you to move forward as an abuse survivor, you have to process what you went through.
[00:00:54] Now, I have done that with Mending the Soul, and through some counseling, [00:01:00] and I am much further on my journey than I was 10 years ago. I am able to help other people at this point because I have healed
[00:01:15] to a certain extent. Now, in many soul groups, one of the exercises that we do is tell our story. Some of my participants have never told anyone their story. Not another living soul. And this is part of acknowledging what you went through. This is part of discovering what happened, recognizing that what happened to you was abuse and that it wasn't your fault.
[00:01:58] There are many different [00:02:00] kinds of abuses too. As you listen to my story is very different than other people's stories. But what happens when you tell your story in a safe environment, people that you can trust, is that the power that it held over you, it's no longer there. Now, that sounds very simplistic, but

EP 108: My Story: Part 15: When The Church Staff Doesn’t Like You

Welcome back to My Story series on the podcast. This week I recall the good, the bad, and the ugly about the time I was on staff at a church. I hated the politics, the backbiting, gossip, and legalism that went on behind the scenes. I explain why I haven't been to a ladies retreat in 15 years and the times I was being traumatized on Sunday mornings before I got up to sing. Hi everyone. Welcome back to the podcast. Continuing with my story today. This is part 15, so if you haven't heard the rest of my story, you might be missing some really important relevant events. So go back and listen to previous episodes. They're all labeled "My Story" and they are numbered in order.I did cover my childhood abuse by a school counselor, high school years, in college, getting saved, getting called into the ministry, et cetera. If you don't wanna listen to all of them, I would say go back to, at least when I started dating my ex. To get an accurate picture of where I'm at right now.When telling your story, it is really challenging to put the events together, what to leave out. It's also really hard to relive these memories and describe them the way that they happen to me. That's pretty typical for a survivor. We all have our different stories. They are all valid. Some are more severe than others, but unless you've experienced certain things like gaslighting, manipulation, and emotional abuse, you don't realize how hard it is to set the scene with all its complicatedtwists and turns and miscellaneous tidbits that drive you nuts, but you don't know how to fit it into the narrative.

We are coming back to finish My Story series. We left off leaving our church in the inner city, and taking advantage of a job transfer to move out West. I talk about the adjustments that had to be made, being near my parents, finding a church to serve in. I also discover that the same abuse followed me across the country. [00:01:22] It's a treasure trove of a book. So many things to learn about God. Now, I went to a memorial service this week. I did not know the deceased though. It was two ladies in my Bible study who were sisters. They lost their mom to a rare cancer and it was terrible. She was diagnosed and died within four [00:02:00] months, and so I went to the memorial to support the girls.

Bio:
In March of 2016 I was diagnosed with liver disease, Cirrhosis to be exact. I don’t even drink and here I was labeled with the one disease that never entered my mind as a possibility. This past Spring I was incredibly ill and so frustrated. Here I was trying to live a life pleasing to the Lord, to share His love with the world and now I was facing possible liver transplant, my hair falling out, infertility, anemia, fibroids, potassium deficiency, enlarged spleen, gall stones and a 40% chance of death in the next five years.
My mother swooped in with prayers and a plan. My community rallied around me. My husband was a rock and my father a source of constant encouragement. The help that Jon and I received were the hands of Jesus on the earth. The doctors had no explanation as to why the illness had progressed so far so fast, maybe it was from fatty liver disease or maybe it is some exotic autoimmune issue. Nobody seems to know, all I could do was trust the Father in the midst of what seemed like an “untrustable” situation.
In the midst of this storm I have seen the face of God. I have been carried by the prayers of the righteous. And most importantly I’ve clung to the fact that God still heals today. My empty unfilled Diabetes and High Blood Pressure medicine bottles are a sign of that. The doctor reports that my liver is functioning and there is nothing to do but watch it, spurs me to reply, that I watch only for the manifestation of my healing to be revealed. My clothes are too big and the weight I use to carry has diminished since changing my entire nutritional lifestyle. And I feel great, look pretty cute to. If you knew how sick I was you would rejoice with me that my sluggish liver is starting to trot! Praise the Lord!
But sometimes those nasty little doubts whisper to my mind. So what do you do? First you call the devil a lie, proclaim the Word of God over your life and stand flat footed on the promises of Psalm 118 verse 17 – I shall not die but live to proclaim the work of the Lord! And did you know the liver is the only organ that can regenerate, that’s what I’m experiencing, a creative miracle in my own body!
Then you think of Morgan Freeman. One of his most famous movie lines is from the Shawshank Redemption, “Get busy living, or get busy dying.” Being sick will make you take a long look at your life and I saw some things I didn’t like. Fear that hindered me from pursuing my dreams full out, I saw missed opportunities, many moments I had lived unaware of the presence, the power and the beauty of the Lord.
And I decided no more… In the midst of my sickness, the Lord whispered to me to live! Live with joy, with passion, with a thankful heart and the belief that He can do all things and so the entire focus of Broken Box Ministries has changed. The Lord will satisfy me with long life and show me His salvation! And each moment I have I plan to live joyfully, thankfully and prayerfully. Biography
Dr. Michael Jaquith is a Ph. D. Chemist who left the corporate world and now helps men everywhere discover how to escape addictions and live a more meaningful and fulfilling life. Certified through the Life Coach School with specialization in addiction, he combines cutting edge science and coaching expertise with the time-honored teachings of the Faith. Michael is married with six children and lives in rural northern Idaho.
I offer both direct one-on-one coaching and a group program. These programs are designed to help men make big improvements and transformations in their lives. They will grow as husbands, fathers, employees, and in their faith.

I'm hoping that the podcast episodes, the guests and the resources are helpful to you in your healing journey. That is my goal. I work very hard to bring you the best to improve the value of the podcast. So if you don't know already, I have started to include the transcript in the show notes for you, and the YouTube videos have subtitles.

I know I'm a bit slow to learn the technology, but I've got it done for you, so [00:01:00] I hope that brings value to you. Jake is known for finding the humor in everyday life, and even in difficult passages in Scripture. He loves to study the writings of Paul, passionate about exploring the depths of Scripture, and loves to snuggle up with his wife and cats on the couch. He has a unique and fresh perspective when it comes to studying God's Word. Join us for a enjoyable conversation, filled with practical tools and witty, comical sayings!
Bio:
Jake Doberenz isn’t one thing. He identifies as a polymath, a Renaissance man, or a multipotentialite–one interest or specialty can’t contain him.
But enough of the third-person. I am a writer, speaker, minister, and creative thinker living in Oklahoma City, OK with my wife Samantha. My most significant role is the founder and president of Theophany Media, a Christian education company dedicated to helping Christians engage with culture through new media. I have earned my Master of Theological Studies at Oklahoma Christian University, the same place I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Bible with a minor in Communication Studies. I also worked at my alma mater as a Resident Director and Bible TA.
I write fiction and nonfiction in a variety of mediums, including poetry, short stories, books, stage plays, academic essays, and devotionals. I also venture out into other mediums, like podcasts and video. My favorite topics of choice to discuss and write about (though always changing) include: creating Christian art, helping people understand the Bible better, Christian identity, theology of social media, use of humor in faith messages, superheroes and theology, and a Christian response to culture.

Mark knows first hand what it's like to suffer horrible abuse and find his way back to God. We heard his story back on episode 11. Bio:
Reverend Mark Sowersby has been married to his wonderful wife Jennifer for 17 years and is the father of four children. Mark has been an ordained minister with Assembly of God for over 25 years and is currently a Pastor in Massachussets. Pastor Mark holds a BA in theology from Zion Bible College/Northpoint Bible College. In 2019 Pastor Mark went through a time of great healing. He began speaking about the experiences of his past and God’s grace and the transformational work of forgiveness in his life. He now speaks about his story through his ministry, Forgiving The Nightmare.

[00:00:30] And I feel that this is a very important topic, very important for our healing. So I have a great lineup. Different folks coming on to the show, folks that some of which have been on our show before, repeat guests.
